A Very Real Learning Experience.
Reading about starting a business is useful. Watching one take shape is different.
RetireCoast created Gulf Coast Plumbing Experts so readers could follow the development of a skilled-trades business almost as if they were watching it happen in real life. Rather than discussing business ownership only in theory, we can demonstrate the decisions that have to be made along the way.
The website you are visiting is part of that experiment. As the fictional company develops, this website can develop with it.
Jake Miller is the fictional plumber at the center of the story.
When readers first meet Jake, he is 24 years old. He has learned a skilled trade, is gaining experience, asking questions, observing how businesses operate, and beginning to wonder whether business ownership might someday be possible.
He does not simply quit his job and buy a truck. His journey is intended to demonstrate something far more important: preparation comes before ownership.
Technical skill, troubleshooting, quality workmanship, continuing education, professional reputation, customer communication, and becoming the person others trust when a difficult problem needs to be solved.
Pricing, estimating, cash flow, insurance, taxes, licensing, hiring, marketing, operations, technology, legal structure, asset protection, leadership, succession planning, and eventually creating a business that can operate without its founder doing everything.
Gulf Coast Plumbing Experts is intentionally starting small.
That is part of the lesson.
A new business does not need to pretend that it is already a large corporation. It needs to serve customers well, learn, build repeatable systems, establish a reputation, and invest as the business earns the right to grow.
As Jake’s fictional business develops through the RetireCoast series, this website can change with it. New educational content, business systems, employees, technology, marketing methods, and eventually succession planning can all become visible parts of the experiment.
RetireCoast.com is an educational website focused on helping people make better decisions about retirement, personal finance, estate planning, business ownership, relocation, real estate, and life along America’s Gulf Coast.
Over time, RetireCoast has expanded well beyond traditional retirement topics. One reason is simple: retirement planning often begins decades before retirement. Career decisions, business ownership, investing, taxes, insurance, estate planning, and the eventual sale of a business can all influence the freedom someone has later in life.
The Skilled Worker to Business Owner project grew out of that broader mission. A 24-year-old tradesperson may not be thinking about retirement today, but the decisions made during those early working years can determine whether that person reaches age 70 still working because they must—or selling a valuable company because they planned ahead.
RetireCoast’s goal is not to tell every reader that they should become an entrepreneur. The goal is to help those who are considering business ownership understand what responsible preparation actually looks like.
Although Jake happens to be a plumber, the lessons are much broader than plumbing.
